Judicial History of Manikganj District.
The country of folk music and Hazari Gur or the language of Shaheed Rafiq, the district of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, Manikganj District is located in the Dhaka Division of central Bangladesh. It was established as Manikganj sub-division in May 1845 and this sub-division was first under Faridpur district. Later in 1856, Manikganj subdivision was included in Dhaka district and on March 1, 1984, Manikganj was elevated to a district. The history of the origin of the name Manikganj is still shrouded in mystery. The name of Manikganj was not found in any historical account or government documents before the creation of the colony in 1845. However, there is a legend that in the first half of the eighteenth century, a Sufi dervish named Manik Shah arrived in Maniknagar village of Singair upazila and Manikganj district was named after him.
The history of Manikganj Judiciary is related to the administrative structure. Earlier only Munsef Courts existed in Manikganj during British and Pakistani colonial rule. After 1984, the activities of District Judge Court of Manikganj district are ongoing. Later, on the historic first day of November 2007, Manikganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court was established when the judiciary was separated. Currently Mr. Jayashree Samaddar is working as District and Sessions Judge and Mr. Uppal Bhattacharya as Chief Judicial Magistrate in Manikganj District and Sessions Judge Court.
At present, Manikganj district has one district and session judge court, one women and child abuse suppression tribunal, two additional district and session judge courts, two joint district and session judge courts, seven assistant judges senior assistant judge courts, one legal aid office in seven upazilas. Besides, there is a Chief Judicial Magistrate, an Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate and required number of Judicial Magistrate Courts for the administration of the Magistrate.
Besides, there is a Legal Aid Office in Manikganj district. Here, free legal services, dispute resolution and legal advice are provided to distressed poor people. Moreover, a Marti Dairy Corner has been established in Manikganj District Judge Court.
There are many bright stars of Ainangan from Manikganj district. Justice AKM Nurul Islam, who held the honor of holding the second highest position in the state apparatus of Manikganj. He was born in 1925 in a noble Muslim family in East Khalilpur village of Harirampur police station in Manikganj district. He was subsequently sworn in as an Additional Judge of the Dhaka High Court in 1968 and appointed as a Permanent Judge in 1970. Justice A. K. M Nurul Islam took oath as Chief Election Commissioner in 1977 and was appointed to the post for the second time in 1982. He was elected Member of Parliament from Manikganj-2 Constituency in 1986 National Parliament Election. He was sworn in as the Vice President of Bangladesh on 30th November 1986. He served as the Ministry of Law and Justice. Besides, Hon'ble Justice Khandkar Musa Khaled, Hon'ble Justice Krishna Debnath, Hon'ble Justice Atabullah have been appointed as Judges in the High Court among the judges working as District and Sessions Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate of this district.
The role of the Judiciary, Manikganj in preserving law and human rights is significant. The Manikganj District Judge Court has set an example in the history of Bangladesh judiciary by deciding the road accident case of famous filmmaker Tarek Masud and journalist Mishuk Moni, many sensational murder cases, family and civil cases, and the wise judges of Manikganj are working tirelessly to play an important role in the future.
